POSITION SUMMARY:
- The Beach Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of visitors at Port Stanley by monitoring beach and water activities, preventing accidents, and responding to emergencies. This role involves patrolling the beach, maintaining safety zones, enforcing rules, and providing excellent public service.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Surveillance & Safety:
- Continuously monitor swimmers and beachgoers to prevent accidents and hazards.
- Identify and assess dangerous conditions, including strong currents, tides, or weather changes.
- Establish safe swimming zones with flags and signs.
- Attend regular lifeguard training
Emergency Response:
- Perform water rescues using appropriate equipment and techniques.
- Administer CPR, first aid, and other emergency care as required.
- Assist in coordinating with Central Elgin Fire Rescue/allied emergency services response teams when necessary.
Public Interaction & Rule Enforcement:
- Educate the public on water safety, hazardous conditions, and beach rules.
- Enforce regulations to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors.
- Handle disputes and resolve conflicts diplomatically.
Maintenance & Reporting:
- Maintain rescue equipment and first aid supplies in operational condition.
- Record and report incidents, rescues, and other safety-related matters.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current National Lifesaving Society Certification: Pool, Waterfront, or Surf
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C
- 2+ years Lifeguarding experience
- A high degree of mental alertness for extended periods of time
- Successful completion of the physical fitness-screening test*
- Physical ability to run and stand for extended periods and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work well within a team environment.
- Safe Boater certification is considered an asset
*Lifeguards will be required to attend a tryout to assess preliminary fitness prior to being offered an interview. Fitness testing will include a 400m swim and 800m run. Additional fitness testing throughout training will be required for employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Exposure to stressful situations when dealing.
- Shifts include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on operational needs.
