POSITION SUMMARY:
- The Bridge Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the historic King George VI Lift Bridge in Port Stanley. This role ensures the safe passage of both marine and vehicular traffic through the proper operation of the boat lift. The position requires regular public interaction, strict adherence to established safety procedures, and effective coordination with vessel operators, roadway users, and municipal staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate bridge mechanisms in accordance with established procedures and safety regulations.
- Monitor marine and roadway traffic to ensure safe and timely openings and closings.
- Communicate courteously and clearly with boaters, motorists, pedestrians, and co-workers using signals, radios, or traffic signals.
- Monitor equipment during operation and report equipment malfunctions.
- Maintains the bridge tower control centers in good useable condition with a regular cleaning.
- Maintain logs and records of bridge/lift operations, boat traffic, incidents, and maintenance issues.
- Report mechanical concerns or safety hazards promptly to the supervisor.
- Follows all health and safety practices and procedures.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude is considered an asset
- Ability to follow detailed procedures and safety protocols
- Strong communication and situational awareness skills
- Ability to remain alert and focused for extended periods
- Must have a history of good attendance and reliability.
- Follows all safety rules and maintains a strong safety record.
- Completes work to meet the required quality standards.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Must be able to read and write and keep accurate records, understand and be able to respond to both verbal and written instructions.
- Works effectively both independently and as part of a team, able to accept direction and complete tasks with limited supervision.
